What validation does

Validation focuses on the address itself. It helps answer questions like:

  • Is the email formatted correctly?
  • Does the domain appear able to receive mail?
  • Is the address tied to a temporary or suspicious pattern?
  • Does the address look risky because of a typo or similar issue?

What deliverability testing does

Deliverability testing is about the message after it is sent. It looks at your infrastructure and sending reputation, including:

  • authentication setup

  • inbox placement behavior

That is a different problem from deciding whether the list itself contains bad data.

How they work together

You can have:

  • a clean list but weak inbox placement
  • decent inbox placement but a dirty list that still produces bounces

The best workflow is usually:

  1. clean the list first
  2. make sure your domain authentication is set up
  3. diagnose inbox-placement issues only if problems remain
